India vs England 2nd Odi Highlights

Few would have expected Yuvraj Singh to improve on a 78-ball 138 but he went one better in Indore, following up his second consecutive century - this time rescuing India from a top-order collapse - by dismissing four of England's top five batsmen. The contest was effectively ended when he got rid of Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen in the same over, ensuring India won by 54 runs.

Just when England's bowlers seemed to exercise control over India's powerful batting line-up, they were once again attacked by Yuvraj, who showed no traces of the back injury that troubled him in Rajkot. England were on top early in the game, having reduced India to 29 for 3, but the hosts recovered through a brisk partnership of 134 for the fourth wicket between Yuvraj and Gautam Gambhir. Yuvraj went on to score 118 off 122 balls and led India to 292 for 9.

The target was always going to challenge England and they seemed out of the contest when the asking rate soared towards nine around the 32th over. However, Pietersen decided to take the batting Powerplay and gave Flintoff the licence to break free. He obliged and smashed Harbhajan for three sixes - two over deep midwicket and one straight - in the 33rd over. Flintoff continued his awesome assault and England scored 59 off the final Powerplay, reducing the equation to 110 off 13 overs.

Enter Yuvraj and, with the field spread, he trapped Flintoff lbw with a faster one and bowled Pietersen through the bat-pad gap in the space of four balls. Those two blows virtually secured India's 2-0 lead in the series.

Yuvraj's spell was the second time he had to fire-fight in the match - India's situation bordered on the dire when he began his innings. This pitch, unlike the batting paradise in Rajkot, was two-paced and had variable bounce. Driving and hitting through the line - a feature of several innings in the first match - was hard, for the speed at which ball came on to bat was slower than the batsmen expected. Stuart Broad used the conditions cleverly, holding his length back and moving the ball into the right-hander, and was rewarded with three wickets in his first spell: Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma were dismissed while playing their shots too early.

Yuvraj hit his stride quickly, glancing a no-ball from Andrew Flintoff off his pads four four and pulling the free-hit into the stands at midwicket in the ninth over. Those couple of balls seemed

India scored only 57 off the first 14 overs but Yuvraj and Gambhir took 106 off the next 16. Gambhir reached his half-century off 56 balls, brought up 1000 runs in 2008, and left England ruing a missed run-out opportunity off the very first ball off the match. Yuvraj took longer to reach his fifty - 61 balls - but his next 61 balls produced 66 runs as he attacked England's weaker bowlers and peppered the leg-side with 12 out of his 17 boundaries.

England tried to salvage the situation towards the end of the innings by dismissing Dhoni and Yuvraj just as India were beginning to go for broke. They conceded only 37 off India's Powerplay, taken between the 43rd and 48th over, but were assaulted by Yusuf Pathan, whose late surge included four brutal hits over the long-on and midwicket boundaries. Pathan reached 50 off 29 balls, his maiden ODI half-century, and scored 18 off the final over. India ended with 292 for 9, leaving England with a tough task to

Premier League - Team news: Keane to face Spurs

Everton v Fulham (12:45)

Marouane Fellaini's recent goalscoring form has not eased Everton boss David Moyes's selection headache in the centre of midfield with Tim Cahill fit again after injury. The Australian started on the bench against Bolton and could do again at the weekend. There are slight concerns over the fitness of Tony Hibbert, Yakubu and Nuno Valente, but all three are expected to recover.

Another midweek goalscorer Andrew Johnson is set to start for Fulham against his former club but fellow striker Seol Ki-Hyeon is back in South Korea with a knee injury. Defender Toni Kallio is still suffering from a virus and is rated doubtful for the trip to Goodison.

Chelsea v Sunderland

Ricardo Carvalho misses out for Chelsea after being ruled out for three weeks with a thigh injury and Joe Cole is a doubt with a knock to his ankle. Long-term absentees Didier Drogba (knee), Michael Ballack (foot) and Michael Essien (knee) remain on the sidelines.

Kenwyne Jones came off the bench in the midweek defeat to Stoke with no adverse reaction to an ankle injury, but Roy Keane is unlikely to risk the Trinidad & Tobago striker from the start. Goalkeeper Craig Gordon is still struggling with an ankle knock, so Marton Fulop is expected to deputise again.

Manchester United v Hull City

United boss Alex Ferguson may decide to play Michael Carrick from the start against Hull with Darren Fletcher or Anderson ready to make way. Wayne Rooney could also return after having been left on the bench on Wednesday but Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves (both knee) remain out for the champions.

Tigers captain Ian Ashbee misses out through suspension but other than Craig Fagan (broken leg), Phil Brown has no further injury worries ahead of the trip to Old Trafford.

Middlesbrough v West Ham

Influential midfielder Julio Arca is back in contention for a starting berth after having proven his fitness against Manchester City. But boss Gareth Southgate has doubts over Justin Hoyte (groin) and Robert Huth (ankle); Mido (thigh) is expected to return.

Valon Behrami misses out for West Ham with a calf problem and there is a doubt over Scott Parker (calf) while Herita Ilunga is short of fitness. But defenders Lucas Neill (virus) and James Tomkins (knee) are set for returns following injury while boss Gianfranco Zola is also able to call up new signing Diego Tristan. Longer-term absentees Mark Noble (calf), Dean Ashton (ankle), Kieron Dyer (leg), Jonathan Spector (hip) and Danny Gabbidon (stomach) remain out.

Portsmouth v Wigan Athletic

Pompey boss Tony Adams could recall Glen Johnson (groin) to the starting line-up but Sol Campbell (hamstring) is a doubt. Younes Kaboul is standing by to replace the veteran in the centre of defence. Striker Jermain Defoe is likely to start after he was left on the bench for the midweek defeat to Liverpool.

Wigan boss Steve Bruce has no new injury concerns ahead of the trip to Fratton Park and only Erik Edman (knee surgery) is sidelined. Titus Bramble may come in for Paul Scharner or Emmerson Boyce while Jason Koumas could also be promoted from the bench.

Stoke City v Arsenal

Tony Pulis is expected to name an unchanged side for the visit of Arsenal. Defender Ibrahima Sonko (groin) remains sidelined, as does Liam Lawrence, although the midfielder does hope to return later in the month after undergoing surgery on his ankle.

Arsenal captain William Gallas (hamstring) is set to miss out for Arsene Wenger's men, with Emmanuel Eboue (knee) also a concern.

West Bromwich v Blackburn Rovers

Ishmael Miller was on target for West Brom against Newcastle and could be rewarded with a starting berth against Blackburn. Roman Bednar would be the man to miss out.

Roque Santa Cruz is doubtful for the visitors after succumbing to a calf injury in midweek during the warm-up at Villa Park. David Dunn (calf) is the only other notable absentee for Paul Ince's men.

Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool (17:30)

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp seems set to name an unchanged side for the visit of Liverpool to White Hart Lane. Michael Dawson remains sidelined, with the defender serving the final game of a three-match ban for his red card against Stoke.

Robbie Keane has overcome a groin injury and is set to face his former club but Fernando Torres (hamstring) is unlikely to be risked. Albert Riera, Daniel Agger and Javier Mascherano may also be recalled.

SUNDAY

Bolton Wanderers v Manchester City (16:00)

Midfielder Gavin McCann will return to action for Bolton after serving a one-match suspension in midweek for the red card he received against Tottenham.

For Manchester City, stiker Jo is doubtful after suffering a bout of tonsillitis, adding to Mark Hughes's injury list which includes Martin Petrov, Michael Johnson, Valeri Bojinov and Benjani Mwaruwari. Daniel Sturridge (ankle) is also set to miss out on the trip to the Reebok. Argentinian defender Pablo Zabaleta has completed a three-match ban, however, and is expected to return to the squad.

MONDAY

Newcastle United v Aston Villa (20:00)

Michael Owen could return to the Newcastle line-up for the visit of Aston Villa after shaking off a troublesome ankle injury. Joey Barton, the man in the public eye, is expected to continue in midfield after his goal-scoring return to the starting line-up against West Brom in midweek.

Martin O'Neill remains without Wilfred Bouma (ankle), but otherwise has no injury concerns and could name an unchanged side from that which beat Blackburn 3-2 on Wednesday.

Premier League - Lampard: Ron deserves gong

Both midfielders have been named on the shortlist for the prestigious gong, with Manchester United's Ronaldo the favourite following the Red Devils' Premier League and Champions League triumphs.

"I'll be honest," Chelsea and England star Lampard told the Daily Express. "It looks like it is going to be Ronaldo.

"Anyone who scores 42 goals in a season, performs the way he did and wins the league and the Champions League is going to be hard to beat.

"Ronaldo said it the other day and he's right. The World Player of the Year award goes to a top, top player and it goes generally to those that have won things as well.

"Normally top players win things and when you look at Ronaldo, Kaka, Fabio Cannavaro, Ronaldinho - the recent winners - they have all been successful in their teams."

Chelsea missed out to United on two fronts last season and their domestic challenge suffered a setback with defeat by Liverpool last weekend.

But Lampard believes his side, under new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari, have the tools to top the table this time around.

"I'm very confident," he continued. "In the last two years we have been there or thereabouts and we had so many issues to deal with. It's not an excuse, it's a fact. We changed manager last year, we have had multiple injuries and yet we have been in the mix.

"We have injuries again, but the good thing is we have strength in depth in the squad and a lot of quality people that can come in and do their jobs as good as the people that are coming out.

"If we can keep going through the very difficult parts at Christmas and Easter then hopefully we'll be there again."

Trap recalls Duff for Cyprus test

Damien Duff is back in the Republic of Ireland squad for next week's 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifier against Cyprus after missing last month's games against Georgia and Montenegro.

The Newcastle midfielder has recovered from a knee injury and was named in coach Giovanni Trapattoni's 22-man squad for the tie at Croke Park here on 15 October.

But Steve Finnan, Steven Reid and Stephen Kelly have not been selected because of fitness problems.

There is a return to the squad too for Scunthorpe keeper Joe Murphy, who will provide the back-up to Shay Given and Dean Kiely.

The Republic head into their third Group 8 game, at Croke Park on 15 October, having beaten Georgia 2-1 in Mainz, Germany, and then returned from Montenegro with a hard-earned point after a 0-0 draw in Podgorica.

Cyprus, who face the Georgians in Tbilisi on Saturday - the Ireland game was played at a neutral venue because of the political situation in the former Soviet state - lost 2-1 at home to world champions Italy in their opening fixture last month.

They have a history with the Republic after a 5-2 victory in Nicosia in October 2006 left Steve Staunton's side facing a losing battle to qualify for UEFA EURO 2008.

The sides drew 1-1 at Croke Park in the return game a year later, when Finnan's injury-time strike secured a point, but the damage had already been done.

Lampard hypes Gerrard partnership

Frank Lampard admitted Tuesday that England fans have yet to see the best of him and Steven Gerrard but dismissed suggestions their failure to gel has been the root cause of the side's under-performance over recent years.

The Chelsea midfielder and his Liverpool counterpart look set to be given another chance to prove they can form an effective partnership in central midfield when England face Kazakhstan in a 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa qualifier on Saturday.

But Lampard believes there is little to be gained from another round of discussion over whether the two players are too similar to be played together.

"My view is that it is very important to talk about the team - it is not about individuals," he said after England's first training session ahead of the Kazakhstan match and next week's trip to Belarus. "The performance in Croatia last month showed more than anything that when we play as a team, that is what is important and the manager is focused very much on that.

"If you look too much into side issues, you'll find your own problems -- the important thing is to win the game."

Lampard's performance in the 4-1 win in Croatia and his current form for Chelsea mean he is certain to keep his starting line-up but England boss Fabio Capello does not have the option of playing an unchanged side because Joe Cole is out injured, which means Gerrard will almost certainly come back in.

"All the partnerships are important all over the pitch," Lampard added. "Of course me and Steven, when included, whether it is together or one or the other, want to be at our best. And probably we would both hold our hands up and say over the last couple of years we've not done that.

"There are times with any partnership when it works and when it doesn't work. We get on very well off the pitch and we get on well on the pitch but we want to improve," he added. "We have been playing at a high level for our clubs and people expect the same for England and it does not always happen."

Generation game put on hold

Large swathes of Germany have been basking in unexpected sunshine this week, even though the north European nation had been preparing itself for the mists and chill of autumn. The capricious weather certainly seemed to reflect the national footballing mood, as golden oldies Michael Ballack and Torsten Frings have reported fit bang on time for a pair of crucial 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifiers, spelling the end of a period of experimentation when youth was given a chance.

The UEFA EURO 2008 runners-up and Russia, the two biggest names in European qualifying Group 4, grapple in Dortmund on Saturday in a clash likely to have a significant bearing on the final outcome in the section. Following an unconvincing 3-3 draw away to Finland, in which a Miroslav Klose hat-trick spared the blushes of a makeshift line-up rocked by injuries, Germany boss Joachim Low is both relieved and delighted to welcome back his battle-hardened warriors for the potentially pivotal showdown.

The tangible relief in the Germany camp at the return of the two top-notch midfielders also serves to highlight Low’s main medium-term dilemma. With just over 600 days to go until the Opening Match in 2010, the national head coach is short of options, as he confessed to reporters gathered at German FA (DFB) headquarters: "I need more leaders!"

Lippi spices up Italy mix

it was painted with the wide openness so enchanting to the neutrals. That 'it' was Group 7 of European Zone qualifying to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, a pool which kicked off with Austria, France, Romania and Serbia cast as its genuine contenders to advance on to the grandest stage in international football.

The consensus was that this candidacy did not involve Lithuania. Maximum points from two games later, however, the challenge of Jose Courceiro's side is certainly being taken seriously.

Tomas Danilevicius has played an indispensable role in this success, bullying the Romanian defence throughout Lithuania's stunning 3-0 win in Cluj, and then masterfully scoring both goals in a 2-0 reverse of Austria.

Kaka encouraged to be himself

Attacking midfielder Kaka will be encouraged to be himself if he is chosen to make his international return following an 11-month absence, Brazil coach Dunga has revealed. The 26-year-old has suffered a series of nagging injury problems this year, forcing him to miss all of the Seleção's 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifiers in 2008.

"We all want to be able to count on Kaka but unfortunately he has been out for a while because of injury," Dunga told reporters at the national team's training camp in the mountain resort of Teresopolis, ahead of Sunday's match away to Venezuela.

"I hope that Kaka will be Kaka, nothing more than that. I haven't had to speak to him because we don't have any problem," he added when asked if he had had a private conversation with the player.

Brazil badly need a win to lift pressure after a poor run of results, culminating in a goalless draw at home to struggling Bolivia last month. The five-time world champions, the only team to have played at every FIFA World Cup, are second in the ten-team South American qualifying group, which reaches the halfway mark at the weekend.

They have slipped four points behind leaders Paraguay and, with three teams sitting just behind them, could quickly drop down the table if they fail to win in San Cristobal. Brazil will be without striker Luis Fabiano through injury, while midfielder Diego is suspended and Ronaldinho has been dropped.

"The fact that we can't keep the same team complicates things," said Dunga. "We have to try and keep the same side for four or five games."
